Quinta de Mata Mouros

A taste of History

Quinta de Mata Mouros is a historic estate situated on the left bank of the River Arade, in southern Portugal's Algarve region, near the legendary Xelb - once one of the wealthiest cities in Al-Andalus, now known as Silves. It is an oasis of freshwater springs, fertile land, and lush vegetation in an otherwise naturally arid region.

The property is steeped in over a thousand years of fascinating legends and well-documented stories. Its name is itself shrouded in mystery, with possible origins including the fact that troops settled there during the Christian reconquest - "mate-mor" - or that there was a forest that belonged to the Moors.

The Mata Mouros estate comprises several unique features, including the historic Convento de Nossa Senhora do Paraíso building, the Lake, the Monks Garden, the Palace, a Vineyard, and the Convento do Paraíso Winery.

Visiting Quinta de Mata Mouros grants you the opportunity to experience the best-kept secret of the Moors, hidden beneath the woods - the peace and tranquility of a once-holy sanctuary, now infused with the freshness of the Algarve's finest wines.
